You may be asking yourself, “What is the Chinese New Year?”The Chinese New Year is also known as the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival. This year it begins on February 3. The celebration can last anywhere from 2 weeks up to a whole month.

Did you know? The Chinese New Year never falls on the same day each year. Yes, it’s true! The Chinese use the lunar calendar to determine traditional holidays, and the Chinese New Year is one of the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The first day of the Chinese New Year can fall anywhere between the dates of January 21 and February 20.

On the eve of the Chinese New Year you’d eat dinner with your family. The menu might include pigs, ducks, chickens, and sweets. You’d end the evening of the New Year by setting off fire crackers. Then early the next morning you’d wake up with your family, your children would wish you a happy and healthy new year, and there’d be a Red Pocket Money Envelopes waiting for them with a gift of money.

In addition to the Chinese New Year coming on February 3, there are other great holidays and excuses to throw a party! Mark your calendars now for Groundhog’s Day-February 2, Super Bowl Sunday-February 6, Mardi Gras-March 8, and St. Patrick’s Day-March 17.
